Virtual cajon online
Play with your fingers on the tapa or on the keyboard. On a tablet, go full screen.
Hit anywhere on the tapa with your fingers, even with several at once. Bass is in the center, slap in the top corners, and quiet strokes with snare buzz near the side edges. On the keyboard: bass — F J, slap — D K, quiet stroke — S L.
How a cajon sounds
A cajon is a wooden box you sit on and play with your hands on its front plate, the tapa. Our cajon has a 2 mm Baltic birch tapa, and inside, along the left and right edges, there are snare wires — they give the crisp, sandy buzz.
Bass is a palm stroke in the center of the tapa: low and deep, like the kick drum of a drum kit. Slap is a finger stroke on a top corner: sharp and crisp, like a snare drum. The closer to the edge you hit, the more the snare wires buzz. Light touches near the side edges are quiet strokes: you can barely hear them, but they keep the pulse going between the main strokes.
Try a simple rhythm: bass — slap — bass — slap, steadily along with the metronome. Once you have it, turn on the backing and pick a rhythm from the rhythm library.
Playing on a tablet
Press “Full screen”: the tapa fills the whole screen, and the screen stays on. Put the tablet on your lap or on a table and play with your fingers. The “Top view” switch turns the tapa so that its top edge faces you — that is how you see the cajon when you sit on it.
